RACIBORSKA 44 — EXTENSION OF ASP CAMPUS IN KATOWICE

Nizio Design International received an honorary distinction in the Association of Polish Architects (SARP) competition for the architectural concept of the Raciborska 44 project — an extension of the Academy of Fine Arts campus in Katowice.

The jury awarded the distinction for the successful shaping of the building’s form through a thorough investigation of how best to admit natural sunlight into every room. The resulting mass — through a considered balance of weight and lightness — conveys both the gravitas and the openness expected of an institution of higher education.

A tripartite volume of irregular plan rises through the stacking of three modules, forming terraced setbacks to the east and south that taper towards the roof — a direct consequence of solar angle analysis. To the north, a minimalist street facade contrasts with the glazed elevations: asymmetrically placed double-height windows punctuate a continuous plane, while a plain entrance portal opens to a multi-purpose foyer. The transparent, double-skin facades are integrated with active louvre systems responsive to solar conditions and with quantum-coating photovoltaic panels that generate electricity on-site. By calibrating the form and height of its three modules to their context, the building enters into conversation with the ASP Rector’s building and the existing campus at Raciborska 50, reinforcing the coherent architectural identity of the entire campus.
