REGIONAL MUSEUM IN KONIN

Nizio Design International received the third prize in the two-stage SARP competition for the architectural concept of the exhibition and education building complex with surroundings at the Regional Museum in Konin, Gosławice.

The project rests on two equal premises: respect for the historical identity of the site — a listed complex comprising the former Distillery, Spirit Warehouse and a fifteenth-century castle — and the introduction of contemporary infrastructure meeting current standards for cultural institutions. The historic buildings have been adapted with their authentic architectural character restored: ceramic roof tiles, original facade articulation and joinery faithful to the historic form. The new element is a lightweight glazed workshop pavilion of steel construction, its facade clad in brick salvaged from demolished existing elements — a material reference to the site’s industrial past. A glazed connector between the pavilion and the Distillery creates the shared heart of the complex: an entrance zone that integrates all of the museum’s functions.

The landscape design organises the museum grounds along clear compositional axes — the front facade of the Distillery and its chimney stack from Gosławicka Street, a view corridor opening towards Lake Gosławickie, and the axis running from the open-air museum towards the castle. The eastern, industrial-educational zone transitions naturally into the western landscape zone, conceived in the tradition of the Polish sentimental garden, where soft paths and layered planting compositions frame views towards the site’s defining landmarks.
