Raciborska 44 - rozbudowa infrastruktury dydaktycznej kampusu Akademii Sztuk Pięknych na rzecz sztuki i dizajnu w Katowicach

Honorable Mention for Nizio Design International in the “Raciborska 44” Competition for the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice

Nizio Design International has received an honorable mention in the architectural design competition organized by the Association of Polish Architects (SARP) for the project “Raciborska 44 – Expansion of the Educational Infrastructure of the Academy of Fine Arts Campus for Art and Design in Katowice”.

Jury Verdict:
The Competition Jury awarded the honorable mention for the successful shaping of the building form, achieved through a thoughtful approach to maximizing natural daylight access in every room. The resulting volume, balancing mass and lightness, reflects both the gravity and openness of an institution of higher learning.

The concept developed by Mirosław Nizio and the Nizio Design International team envisions a functional and expressive building that engages in dialogue with the surrounding architecture of the Katowice Academy of Fine Arts campus. The irregular, three-part structure rises in a stepped formation, ensuring optimal daylight penetration into the interiors while respecting sunlight access for neighboring buildings. The transparent, double-layer façades integrate active louver systems and quantum coating technology for energy generation.

The design prioritizes energy efficiency and environmental sustainability through innovative solutions such as a glazing system with energy-producing quantum coating, a rooftop wetland retention basin with a sealed underground tank, abundant greenery and natural ventilation. Movable walls in the foyer and multiple studios allow for flexible spatial arrangements based on users' needs. The compact building mass, high thermal insulation, and use of thermal inertia enhance energy performance and user comfort.

By adjusting its form and height to match nearby structures – including the Academy’s rectorate building and existing facilities at Raciborska 50the proposed design reinforces the sense of cohesion and identity across the campus.

We thank the competition jury for recognizing our vision and extend our congratulations to all the awarded teams!
