The “Stone Hell” monument is designed as an architectural and spatial installation utilising the universal language of arts and the context of the place to tell about the tragic chapter in the history of the 20th c. Europe. The monument will pay tribute to the tens of thousands of the KL Gross-Rosen camp’s inmates. The means to be applied to this end will draw from the concepts of modern architecture that commemorates the Holocaust.
The design concept proposal relies on the idea of exposing the historic part of the quarry that was quarried at the time when the KL Gross-Rosen was in operation. The way to it will be led by concrete stairs that will be cut across by an enormous metal partition. The consecutive stages of the viewing path will be divided into thematic sequences: symbolic journey, successive discovery of the truth, and passage across the border between life and tragic death, between light and darkness.
